Washington trip to Mt Rainier

After 19 years, we go back home to Puyallup Washington.

It was amazing to see the growth of not only the city but the trees. We even passed our street and didn't recognize it.

Our first stop was at the home of Mark and Janene Jasinski in which they spoiled us. It was so nice to be with such close friends.

We decided to go to Mt. Rainier inspite of the predictions of rain. That isn't new in that part of the country. Yes it did rain, but in the breaks we took a walk and enjoyed the wildflowers, falls, Jackson lodge, and the beauty. It made us homesick, but I have to admit, I do like the warmth now but this beauty cannot be duplicated.

In the picture where the clouds and mist reign, you see the sun undercover but still awe inspiring.

Michael sent this picture over of Austin. He had spent the night at the hospital because of his asthma that was making it difficult for him to breath. Austin was coughing and very miserable. They had to take him in the middle of the night. Mike and Sheri took turns staying with him. The doctor ordered quite a few tests on him, and Austin was connected to an IV, but he is much happier now and we are go glad. He is soooooo sweet.

A while back I decided I wanted to learn Braille. One of the ladies at the cannery was born with very back eyesight, along with several other problems. She was amazing to me. She had a special computer that allowed her to do so much. She was even one of the people who helped make it possible to convert Harry Potter Books to Braille so the blind could read them. I did learn the alphabet and bought the punch and special paper. I practiced quite a bit, but using your fingers to read was a whole other ballgame. Danielle told me that many of the blind cannot read Braille because it is difficult. I want to remember her. She doesn't work at the cannery anymore, but I miss her.

Josh and Laura got a quote from Penneys, that was very high. Laura and I went out a few times trying to find the right fabric. She bought samples but when they hung them up in the family room they looked washed out. Tried again, this time we looked for a boulder print. Unfortunately, you do not see the true colors in these pictures. This was a favorite of Josh's and Val really liked it also. Laura had 2nd thoughts about it and decided to add the stripes of teal and then really liked it better. The black out material definitely made a heavier drape and will need a strong rod. I am anxious to see how they turn out. They may wish they had gone with Penney's. It has been a while since I made drapes. My first job when I got married was working at Zions in Provo making drapes. Of course, they had better equipment than what I have in my living room. She bought a fabulous throw rug that has the same colors and really ties it all together.

What a beautiful day in Arizona. We are blessed to have a neighbor, Bruce Markland so willing to let us use his pool. Jim is in the pool with a torn rotary cuff. He will see the doctor on Monday, June 8th. He is pretty uncomfortable, but a tough kid he is! Josh is under cover. This is some indication that it is quite hot and he is looking for some shade. Laura is feeling great and is enjoying the break in their busy day.

Road trip to Idaho

I spent a few days in Idaho checking on the grandkids in Boise. We do not get to be them very often. Matt & Annette had a flood in the washroom which ruined the kitchen floor as well. They have been working hard at replacing the old. Everything looks so nice. I went with Annette to the YMCA in which they are members of. I was very impressed with all the activities that are available along with swimming pool, babysitting, weights, and raquetball. She loves going. Annette has learned to be a coupon shopper and has developed quite a plan for saving money.

Yes, I am trying to hold up a hula hoop. When I first started, I discovered I had no muscle around my middle and it would not stay up. After a period of time (I will not disclose just how long) I discovered the hip action and had fun with my new toy. What a cheap way to exercise. Isaw this beautiful woman on TV with the figure that I wanted and she was using a hoop. Well I have a lot of working out to do to catch up to her. It is fun to do while watching a good TV show. I can hold it up for 15 minutes. Now it I would just drop the goodies and cut out chocolate.

I received a call from a friend who could not get her bread to rise. I used her wheat but followed my recipe.

She was right, it just would not take off. Besides that the wheat stunk!

(Her's is the one on your left). I love making bread in a can now. (The far right)

I tried taking the wheat and sprouting it. No sprouts. I sent a sample to the BYU Lab and they reported that the wheat was dead. It turns out the wheat had been store in a very warm environment, like a storage unit.

If it didn't stink, one could still us it for breads that do not use yeast. This is the first time, I had seen this situation. Like I mentioned it was not stored properly. The wheat was almost 40 years old.

Josh and Laura's dog, Maggie spent a couple days with us. She was in heat for the very first time and we were under strict command not to let Maggie get out of the yard! No pregnancy for this little one. Maybe the next time around. I left her chastity belt at her home, so I had to come up with another one. Thank goodness I had a pair of Tate's underwear when he was younger. Because of my sewing skills I knew what to do: hole for the tail and safety pins to make the undies a little more secure and of course a special little pad inside. She was so cute, it just made me want to shed a tear to realize she was growing up so fast. Thank goodness for our HOA rules that dogs cannot run loose otherwise they would have all been in our front yard.

Well, Josh and Laura missing their little one came and took Maggie home. They are very good parents.

Chandler Trek

It was time for Chandler East Stake to host a pioneer trek. It was near Dugas and I-17. The last one was 4 years ago. I was asked to help with the taffy teaching along with several other ladies. Shellie Seymore was put in charge and her husband was going to help. I suggested to Jim that we go up the night before and stay in a really cool hotel. We found one for $42.00. You can imagine how cool it was. I took a sleeping pill just I wouldn't know when the roaches crawled over me. That saved up from having to leave at 7 am the next day to get up there. That night it was one of the worst torrential rains up there is a long time. The sleet and hail came down on them, freezing the pioneers and leaders to the bone. It was a tough night having to set up tents. It came down just as they were heading up this hill, and angels were in hiding to help them . The angels had thin sheets over their shorts. Bodies were cold but so tired they slept. Thank goodness the sun smiled down upon them and they finished the trek. They had many spiritual experiences and loved the experience.

The kids had fun and were happy to have such a lovely day after the night before!

The load on the handcart was difficult when the unexpected rains poured through

the night. The handcarts could not move, the kids were covered in mud, but the next morning

the sun came out and dried up all the rain. The mud fell off the wheels, so the trek continued.

Jim feeling sorry for us, offered his services in cleaning up the many pots and cookie sheets that we were constantly handing him. There were 250 kids on the trek.

All the children were asked to invite their parents or someone special. Jim was so pleased to be asked to join. He felt like the oldest because he was the only one needing a chair! Lucas is a sweetheart.

While Lucas was working with some sticks which were used to show the beat of the music, it looks like grandpa got a call and he is checking things out on the Blackberry, blueberry or boysenberry!

Simple Sprouting was a hit. I am amazed at the number of people who are interested

in eating healthy.

Our First Preparedness Fair in our Building on Jan 17th. I tried taking pictures with my camera and realized I left the chip at home. Thanks goodness Val came prepared and Josh took some pictures. All my kids helped and that was so nice. We had over 19 booths and It felt good to have it over, but it also felt good because so many came from the ward and from personal invitations outside the ward. We put together a notebook also. Our Fair was called "Preparedness Matters....". We hope, everyone had opportunity to gain information and was motivated to add to their preparedness and storage in some small way.

Jim and I decided to have some fun with the grandkids, Caleb, Lucas and Tate. A new store opened at the mall called the Lego Shop. We were brave and left our wallets home! It was fun to see them run from one display to another. WE went for a bite to eat afterwards. Watch Tate as he takes each bite. Taking them out takes us back in time when our own sons loved Lego's.

Maybe that would be a safe stock option.

I received these cute pictures from Matt. There was enough snow in Idaho that Matt did what any scouter would do and that was to build an igloo for his kids!

Here are some pics of our backyard igloo. Matt, Adam, Emily slept in it last week...well, Matt kind of slept. The last two pics with Nathan and Sofia were several days later, as the igloo is melting and shrinking.

We asked the Children to just give us a service this year, instead of buying a gift. And they did help us in so many ways, volunteering to come and help and that made us very happy. We love our sons and their wives and our 9 grandchildren so much. We just wanted to show a couple unique gifts that were made for us. Val put together this book and here are a couple pages. Sorry for the light overhead, it is not part of the pictures. Click on Them, to see pictures.

The Christmas Season

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree. Silver and Blue are my favorite colors for Christmas.
Jim goes along with anything, as long as he doesn't have to help. But he did put lights on our large tree outside and I love him for that! (reminder: Click on pictures to get a closer look)

This is our Front Yard on Christmas Day. There is still a lot of green. For those of you who remember that when we lived in Utah, I bought a nativity set for our yard. It was made of plastic and Jesus came with a Halo that I removed. Jim never liked the set, but it bothered me that most people put up snowmen, and carnivals in their yards so I decided that the plastic nativity was good. When we moved we dropped off the star to one family and the nativity portion to another to be silly. I don't think they were as fond of them as I was.

This year after living in AZ for at least five years, I had to do something. I made this throw and tied it up to our front posts. Yes it was the only one on several blocks, and it wasn't made of plastic, but it made me feel like it was more than a Holiday.

Christmas this year was a tradition change. We almost always have turkey, but talking with my daughters-in-law, Laura and Val, it was decided we would make our own Cafe Rio Dinner. We shared assignments and I do wish I had taken pictures of the items. Laura made the best tomitillo sauce. Val made the best beans and shredded pork, I made the Cafe Rio Rice and they brought many other items. Lucas said the dinner was delicious, so we know we made the perfect Christmas meal.

Josh and Laura spent the night on Christmas Eve. I made some pancakes for breakfast.

sounds awlful, but you soak wheat and rice the day before and liquify them with the liquids and add to the dry ingredients. So Healthy!

It was needed after the many goodies that were brought to us and eaten.

Christmas Eve wa spent at Sam and Val's home. Her parents, sister and brother-in-law came in from utah. We had the easiest Pre-Christmas dinner. We bought Pizza. This is a first, and we loved it. Caleb is helping with the Christmas story and then we are entertained. They did get a round of approval. Josh is using his little red light to drive the dogs, crazy. Fun evening.

Babysitting

For a few days I babysat desert turtles for a friend. They were giving them to their children for Christmas and needed to keep it a secret. I enjoyed them so much. The strange thing is when Josh saw them, he said he has always wanted a turtle. Unfortunately, they were taken. Tate wanted to put the turtles to sleep, after listening maybe you could tell me if it worked.

The Dance Revolution is so much fun to watch! Unfortunately I tried once before and realized I cannot move fast enough. I wish I had more to show you because they do a great job in following the arrows on the screen. This is great exercise. Both Laura and Sheri have this set-up. Sam has been teaching himself to play the guitar. Josh also plays.

Mike's family came for Thanksgiving. He got in my car and later told me the leather was filthy. I couldn't understand why because we don't use our back seats all that much and then it hit me! Food Storage. I am always lugging boxes of storage for ward members, cans for canning, etc. Well Mike and Austin went to work, and scrubbed my leather and my car looks like new again. Thanks so much for your wonderful service. Come visit more often.

A slip up

Jim two weeks ago decided to bring into the house his gun safe (450 lbs). He and Sam had put down epoxy in the garage. A neighbor came to help, and as Jim was holding on to the Dolly and pulling up, tom pushed. Jim slipped on the carpet and the safe came falling on to Jim, but in his mind he knew he needed to move the hand. He pushed the dolly handle to the side instead of keeping it on his chest. This could have been a disaster for him, but I guess it wasn't his time to be flat chested. His feet were someone crushed the doctor said, and the tissue in his feet were very inflamed. He was unable to walk for a while so this motorized vehicle became his friend. It just so happened the battery died on him while he was using it! His right foot was worse so a boot was given him, and it make a world of difference. As of now he is healing, and we are glad he had no traveling to do for his job. We feel blessed beyond messure. That is how accidents occur, in a split second, life can change.

I've stayed away from the trampoline for over 14 years because that is not what grandma's do and besides I don't like the way it makes me feel, if you know what I mean. Tate asked me to join him. Ok, I will just get inside. All of a sudden, I had a flash of when I could jump as high as the kids. What is the worst that could happen? Maybe a quick trip to the ladies room. I can handle that. I jumped 25 times and then took a rest. I didn't want to shake up anything that should stay put! I jumped another 25 times and decided that maybe I would do this more often. Thanks Tate, Grandma loves you

Temple in Draper

Jim was training in SLC and Oakland Construction was having a BBQ at the Stake Center next to the New Draper Temple. Tom Howell invited us to this event. Jim's sister, Anna and husband, Wes, joined us. Colton Taylor is another PM in the North America Southwest Area. We didn't take any pictures inside. I believe they call it a 4-50 building. The wood inside is beautiful and from Africa. They didn't spell it out for us but it was pronounced Makore. It doesn't need any finish on it. Jim and I truly loved it. The granite outside is from China. Wow was that a shock. It too is beautiful. What is interesting is that every piece is cut over in China and sent to the site with a number. The builders connect the numbers.

Now if there is any incorrect information here, please e-mail me so I can make the corrections. WE had a wonderful tour and in January the temple will be ready for dedication.

Sports Night in Lindsay 2nd Ward

When we arrived home from our trip to Idaho and Utah on Saturday October 18th, we had a ward activity that Sharon McDonald promised would be lots of fun and it was. We raced to clean out the car, decide on dinner for Sunday, send out a couple e-mails and make it in time for the BBQ and Sports Night Activity at 5:30. Whew, but we were energized once we got there. Jim wins the tricycle race and I have fun on the human slingshot. It was a nice evening. As much as we like to get away and visit there is still no place like home.

Park City

Just a reminder as usual. Be sure to click on the pictures, you get to see more details. Main Street has some remodels and newer buildings going up. The area seems to be booming with all the businesses. But when I was walking around around 9 am the place was empty. It became alive after 11:00 am. The shop owners said they missed the activity that the Olympics brought in. I went into the Roots Shop. They became famous for the berets that were worn during that time. I have saved mine!

I love it when jim has his yearly training in Utah. I definitely will not miss this business trip. We stopped first in Idaho and then headed for Park City Utah where his two day training began. I was on my own and choose to walk the main street. It was a beautiful day and I took my sweet time enjoying the sites, art galleries, unique clothing stores, & the Dog Shop. The picture shows me with the owner's dogs that roam the boutique. Friendly but the place smelled of dog. I was surprised when I entered The Family Tree Center that it was all about Genealogy. I was at the tree, and they pushed a button that I was unaware of and all of a sudden I saw my picture in this frame on the wall. They take free pictures for those who come in. The only thing I bought was lunch and some real dark chocolate for a treat. We stayed at the Lodge at the Mountain Village. The picture shows the studio we stayed in and one of the views from the patio. In between the buildings looks like an ice-skating rink. As usual there is so much to do and so little time. Jim said, he would love to be back in Utah. But I am afraid we would have to bring our grandkids with us and the warm weather. (I guess I should say HOT). Unfortunately, Jim and I did not get to meander around together. My sister, Karen, came up the 2nd day for a couple hours. The only thing that bugged me was I forgot my cell phone in our studio and I had headed to SLC with Karen. Thank goodness before Jim left his meeting, he called me but it was a man's voice he heard, so he hung up and tried again. This time he took a moment to talk to the man, and Jim learned of my reckless behavior. His meeting was just in the next building so he stopped in and picked up my cell phone. YAHOO. In 1871 settler John D. Lee was directed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to establish a ferry on the Colorado River. The location had earlier been scouted by Jacob Hamblin on his numerous missionary expeditions to the Hopi and the Navajo east of the Colorado River. Today, the site is used primarily for fishing and launching rafts.

The new Navajo Bridge in Grand Canyon National Park is the only crossing of the Colorado River for a stretch of (600 miles). The $15 million steel arch bridge carries traffic across Marble Canyon, (470 feet) above the Colorado River. The 1929 Navajo Bridge remains a pedestrian bridge.

On the Navajo Nation (east) side of the bridge, there is an area for Native American craft vendors. The Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center opened for business in April of 1997 .

Jim and I have been to the bridge several times, but this time drove the seven miles to the beautiful Lees Ferry along the River. We would have liked to have stayed longer because it is so peaceful.

Sofia and Emily love playing with their little pets. We counted 150. They hope Christmas brings a few more faithful critters to their home. I had fun doing girl things with them. We did sewing and making presents. Sofia puts the finishing touches on her gift to Emily. It was made with love. Emily is the older sister who loves being a cheerleader. She and Emily spend lots of time together. Matt has often said to me, "Mom, you were cheated not having any girls". He enjoys them so much.

Nathan may be the youngest in the family but he feels he can keep up with everyone else when it comes to eating, sleeping and jumping. He was shy around us at first, but soon warmed up to us.

Jim and I went to Idaho to visit Matt's family.
We watched Adam make a goal during his soccor game, but most of the time we were buried under blankets and layers of clothing. We hope Adam stayed warm with all the running he did in the field.

New building in Mesa

Jim and I went to the ground breaking in Mesa on Saturday. Nov 2007, The Stake Center had been torched by an arsonist. Jim is the Project Manager (PM) over The new Stake building. The building was totally destroyed. The building was about 17 years old and didn't have a sprinkling system. This flag survived and the scouts led us in the pledge of alliegence

One of the things we love to do is pass the rocket in the pool. Caleb is a great swimmer. He is like a shark in the pool, and glides down at the bottom of the pool while grandpa and grandma float on top, You won't get to see those pictures.

Josh & Laura joined us and we headed for San Diego to go to the beach and of course visit Mike, Sheri, Tyler and Austin! There is no doubt about it, we all loved our visit. Jim showed his great skill riding the waves. Little Maggie (toy poodle) even braved the water. Mike found a way to keep the boys still for a moment.

We had a family party for Laura, at least for those in Arizona. The Kings always serve pie. We gave silly string to Caleb and Lucas to spray on Laura, but she got lucky because most of it was sprayed on the floor and table.

King kids all have bad teeth. CLICK for close-up. Pillowcase given to all grandkids to remind them of our retreat. The Brownies were made up at the cabin. Due to the high altitude, the brownies were brought down LOW. Flour was added to a new batch, and to our joy they were a success. The King Family Retreat has come about because Grandpa Kenneth King and his wife, Anna decided years ago to start a family. They were married in 1943. I figure close to 90 in his down line.

The egge toss was a hit. Lucas is in the grey shirt and ends up doing quite well. He is caught drinking in camp. Caleb was having fun on the cliff with the RC car (Jim's). He accidently directs the car to go over the edge and into this pit. It was like a roach on its back trying to turn over. Caleb retrieves the car and there is no damage. Jim and Brian Alben are like kids when they have their toys.

We headed out on July 11th for our ward camp out. We hear that in Payson it was raining so hard that a family turned around and came home. They had only 17 more miles to go to get to the campsite. We decided to go the next morning. So much work had been spent on this. It turned out that higher in the mountains, it was overcast but it still was nice. We take the grandkids when we go up because how much fun is it without them. They loved the zipline. One of the boys pulled Lucas up to the beginning point of the tree but he was so light he was smashed against the tree and came down in tears it hurt. But before that happened He had fun and so did Caleb. Lucas and I are trying to reach hands behind the tree.

On the 4th of July, Sam's family joined us to go swimming at the Hamilton Pool. Caleb gets more than a fun swim but his first chin split.

Small Towns are famous for something

Jim and I were in Utah this past week. We stopped in Hatch and only learned the name of the town when we stopped for food. We never noticed a sign letting us know where we were. While waiting for our meal a truck drove up and had pre-ordered. She told us it was the best place in town and they always stop to get the fajita salad. After 20 minutes out came Jims hamburger.
Wow, I had never seen anything so large. He did not eat the whole thing, but it truly was a kodak moment. He had to ask for a knife because he couldn't get his mouth to stretch! I had an enchilada with rice and beans and it truly was the best tasting I have ever had. I am afraid to ask if they used lard! Look for this sign and be sure to let them know we sent you!

Grandpa turned 86 years old today. The picture taken of he and Jim was on March 16th 2008. I am sure he looks about the same 2 weeks later! He is a man of loyalty and love. He has the strength of the Hulk, the good looks of a GA and the health of a younger man. We love him!

March was a busy month for family events. We headed for Calif on March 16th. We attended the blessing of Adam, Jeannie's 2nd son. (Grandpa King gave theblessing). Adam is so handsome! Jerry's family was all there.

March 22nd was a special day. Caleb got baptized by Sam. It was a lovely day. Someone had let the water drain just before it was time for Caleb to get baptized. They turned to fawcett on full blast, while we went to the primary room for the program. Lucas sang solo and he was so good. It was so quiet. He said he was not scared. A friend went to check on the water and decided it was too hot, so he added more cold. Burrrr was the response from Sam. I guess it was better than being scaled.

I was on the internet and came across a site about popular children names. I was amazed to see three of my kinds names on the top ten for over 40 years. When we named them, I didn't know what was popular, there was no computer to tell me, but I loved their names given to them at birth and they are still my favorite names to this day. Check out the site. You may have to copy and paste.

Since this is a journal for me, I went back a number of years and by the looks of things, you can tell the year by hairstyles and clothing. I cannot say that I love the things we thought was in as the years have passed! But they do tell a little about taste!

A few years ago, I learned how to make Kaleidoscopes using pictures that are taken. I have made several. I was thinking I would go into a little business because they are so unique, but life keeps me more busy in other directions. I love hearing from you and learning of your activities and I appreciate you keeping me posted as to your experiences, family life, work, callings.(Most often through e-mail). This is how we come to know each other.

My grandson when he was younger sent me a picture of the sun, moon and planets. I wanted to make him a project that was personal, so see what I did with it. It is fun to have creative outlets which can be found in so many ways.

I love butterflies, and I am trying to discover plants that will bring more of them into my yard.
The picture has many connecting lines giving much interest.

Time for another date, but this time Josh and Laura . Stewart and Brenden, joined us along with our neighbors down the street, Kevin, Ann and their two children. They fixed the lunch the first time we went out, and we fixed it this time. The sad part was that their son was not feeling well and by the next day, they all had the fever which lasted about 3 days. None of the rest of us caught it. I am glad they were not poisoned! It was a hot day, but perfect for exploring. 03/2008

Trying to find some fun in cooking

For three evenings, Chef Brad came to teach about 16 of us in my home about the grains, sneak nutrition, pressure cooking, pizza making, and salads. It will take a while to apply all we learned but slowly I am testing and trying out some new recipes. Each time he came he shared a couple recipes with us. Guess who was the cook in his home? The 2nd picture, you may question if it is edible. It actually was the hit of desserts. BREAD PUDDING with fruit. Oh so yummy.

Jim was traveling to Tuscan on March 25 and returning home on the 26th. He invited me to join him for a date into the Sabino Canyon within the Coronado National Forest. Talk about a perfect day. We stopped off at Beyond Bread to get a sandwich to take on the shuttle. There was a 40 minute naration as we heading up the canyon. It has been closed to private vehicles since 1978
Some people hike the trip which is 3.7 miles to stop #9. The shuttle goes to stop 4 and turns around due to flooding from a 100 year storm that destroyed bridges, and changed the face of the canyon. We hiked from stop 4 to 9. It was paved road and I had brought my new walking stick that Jim bought for me. We came to a sign that said "The road that goes nowhere" The conservation corp after WWII wanted to build a road to Mt Lemmon, build a dam for recreation. After getting to stop 9, the corp was disbanded and thus the sign states it as it is! We also learned that the weather on Mt Lemmon can create flash floods over on Sabino. Many people were stranded.

Another year has come and gone, and most of us have undoubtedly made New Year’s resolutions. But staying focused on our ultimate, long-term goals can be difficult when the instant gratification of “Right Now” is so alluring.To illustrate this point, I tried an experiment with the group of ten-year-olds I was teaching at church.
“You have a choice,” I announced as I held up a bowl of M&M’s. “You can either have a handful of M&M’s right now, or you can each have an entire bag of M&M’s tomorrow.”
“Why don’t we do it the other way around?” Brady suggested. “Give us a bag of M&M’s now or a handful tomorrow!”
The rest of the class loved Brady’s idea. But I didn’t.
“Nope,” I said. “A handful now or the bag tomorrow. That’s the way it’s going to be.”
“How about just a few now and the rest later?” Megan asked.
“Sorry,” I said. “No compromise. You have to make a choice.”
“What if some of us want our M&M’s now, and some of us want to wait?” Adam asked.
“Good idea,” I said. “But no. Whatever you’re going to do, you’re going to do as a group. You guys figure it out. I’m going to get a drink.”
With that I stepped into the hall and wandered down to the drinking fountain, making sure to pause and stretch and meander. I wanted to give them plenty of time to hash this out. We were, after all, talking about chocolate here. If there’s one thing twenty-nine years of marriage has taught me it’s that you have to be very careful about decisions involving chocolate—even if it’s the kind that melts in your mouth, not in your hands.
When I finally poked my head back into the room the decision had been made. The bowl of M&M’s was empty, and there were chocolate-induced smiles all around.
